One of the biggest fortresses in central and eastern Europe. Construction started during the Napoleonic period (1807-1813), it was rebuilt and enlarged by Russians (1830s, 40s). From the 1880s to 1910s system of about 30 forts was built around Modlin. It was defended four times: in 1813 French and Polish troops defended it against Russians; in 1831 Polish Army against Russians, in 1915 Russian troops against Germans and in 1939 Polish against German.
