The Village of Swedeland was originally founded as Matsunk in the early 1700's by Swedish settlers. The Village's name was switched sometime in the Mid 1800's for unknown reasons. The area was originally used for agriculture and was well known for having the most fertile soil in Montgomery County. By the Mid- 1800's the Swede Iron Furnace was in operation along with extensive Limestone and Iron Ore Quarrys. By 1919 the Alan Wood Steel Company had constructed a hulking Iron Mill and Coking facility on the Banks of the Schuylkill River. Alan Wood ceased operation in the late 1970's. In recents times Swedeland is surrounded by a large amount of Heavy Industrial,Light Industrial and Commercial Buisness Districts.
