Garden City, New York

USA / New York / Garden City /

Garden City is a village in the town of Hempstead, NY. It was incorporated in 1919. While not as well known as some others, Garden City was in fact one of the first "planned" suburbs - predating Levittown by almost 80 years. In 1869 Alexander T. Stewart (an Irish immigrant and millionaire businessman) bought several acres of land on the Hempstead Plains and started dividing up streets and lots. The land west of St. Paul's School was laid out in 1907 by landscape architects Charles W. Leavitt, Jr. and Cyril Marshall.

Finding buyers was slow at first, but by the turn of the century Garden City had become a heavily populated upscale neighborhood. It retains this character today, boasting over a century's worth of architectural gems, tree lined streets and a thriving downtown.

  • I grew up here. It is a really beautiful suburb of NYC and deserves its "Garden" name with a beautiful canopy of trees lining most residential streets.
  • Garden City is also one of the more affluent suburbs of New York City, with the majority of homes valued in the 2 million to 5 million dollar range.
  • Manhattan is only 45 minute train ride away from Garden City via the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which is accessable from any of the Village's five stations. Four of these stations are on the Hempsted Branch, which has limited or no express trains. The fifth station, located on Merrilon Avenue, is on the Main Line, so there are several express trains which get you into Penn Station much quicker.
  • actaully it is only 30 minutes now, just take it from mineola station...i haved relative there
  • Regarding the commute, while the New Hyde Park LIRR station isn't in Garden City, it's only about 50 feet past the NW border of GC. It's the closest stop to NYC on the main line and should be fastest. I take the Stewart Manor stop, which is the closest stop to NYC on the Hempstead Line (which is slower than the main line). My commute from the train platform to inside Penn Station is typically 46 minutes. Lots of shopping in GC too: downtown GC, or close by no matter where you live in town. Roosevelt Field shopping mall is right on the border of the eastern side of town.
