Traditionally the site where Macbeth, having killed King Duncan (I) and become King of the Scots some years earlier, is killed by Malcolm (III), son of Duncan in 1054 or, in Shakespeare, by Macduff. Neither is true. There was, in fact, an indecisive battle here between Macbeth and Malcolm in 1054, but Malcolm did not kill Macbeth until 1057 near Lumphanan.

Also said to be one of the possible places that the real Stone of Scone may have been hidden by the monks of Scone Abbey in 1296 after substituting a duplicate for King Edward I of England to unwittingly take to England.

The ruins of two Iron Age forts can be found on the hill.
