Alpha Boys' School is a boarding/vocational school for orphan and delinquent boys. It was first founded as the "Alpha Cottage Orphanage" around 1880 by Miss Jessie Ripoll, a Portuguese-Jamaican who dedicated her life and wealth to the children of the poor--for this, Jessie Ripoll Primary School (located just north) was named in her honour in 1979. Today, the Alpha Boys' music program (the school's shining star) has grown into becoming a Jamaican-Juilliard of sorts for turning once disadvantaged kids into outstanding, and highly sought after musicians.
