Australia's highest town was built by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority as a base for the northern administration of the scheme. Today it is a pretty township with limited commercial accommodation. It is the closest fuel and refreshment base for Selwyn Snowfields and underground tours of Tumut 2 Power Station on the Elliot Way.
