 nuclear reactor, 1966_construction

Multi-loop reactor MIR.M1 has been under operation since 1967. The reactor is mainly used to test different fuels for nuclear reactors under the conditions simulating normal ones (stationary and transient) as well as under some design-basis accidents. The scheduled lifetime of the reactor is till 2020. Reactor MIR is a thermal heterogeneous reactor with beryllium metal as a moderator and reflector. It is a channel-type reactor immersed in a water pool. Such design allows for a combination of advantages of both pool-type and channel-type reactors.
