Seawise University/RMS Queen Elizabeth wreck (Hong Kong)

interesting place, historical layer / disappeared object

The "Seawise University", originally the ocean liner "Queen Elizabeth," was anchored at this spot from late 1971 to early 1972, undergoing renovations to convert her to a floating university.

She caught fire under mysterious circumstances on January 9, 1972 and then rolled over and sank due to the amount of water used to extinguish the fire. The water was shallow, however, and only about half of the liner was submerged.

The portion of the wreck above water was featured in the James Bond film "The Man With the Golden Gun", before it was removed in 1974-5. Much of the liner's hull was left in place, however, buried in Hong Kong harbor and marked as a navigational hazard.

Finally, in 1997, Tsing Yi Island was extended with landfill to create a new cargo terminal. The wreck of the Queen Elizabeth now lies buried underground, beneath Container Terminal 9.
