Kyorin University Hospital, which is one of the eighty-two “Special Functioning Hospitals” in Japan, plays a crucial role as the only university hospital and largest medical center in the Tama District of greater Tokyo. The hospital has 1,153 beds and is characterized with its "base-isolated" buildings that are immune to earthquakes: its out-patient building was the first base-isolated building for a university hospital in Japan when it was built. Not only providing the best possible medical services to individual patients, the Hospital provides various educational programs for students belonging to the Department of Medicine, and Departments in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The average number of outpatients per day at the Hospital is 2,169 (excluding emergency patients), and the number of in-patients is 824 (as reported in 2005). Further, the Hospital gives advanced medical treatment to about 2,000 seriously injured patients per year.
