Delayed Coker

Delayed Coker (El Segundo)

The delayed-coker processes heavy residuum ("hot feed") from the refinery's crude units and produces lighter feed stocks such as heavy gas oil and naptha, but mostly petroleum coke as an end product. The most recognizable part of the unit is the row of six 90 foot tall coke drums. At any given time three of the drums are on line, while the others are either being pre-heated with 400psi steam, or uncapped for the removal of polymerized hydro-carbon (coke) which is then sold as a product.
