Baji Rao Peshwa the First died and was cremated here by the Narmada in April 1740. His Samadhi was built by his loyal lieutenant Scindia (Of Gwalior).Bajirao was appointed Peshwa or prime minister of Maratha empire in the 18th century at the age of 20. He played a pivotal role in expanding Maratha rule. He died on April 28, 1740, of fever in Khargone. Bajirao's remains were consigned to flames at Raverkhedi on Narmada banks. Residents of Khargone are hopeful that success of the film Bajirao Mastani will urge authorities to take steps to restore this historic place and draw tourists.Bajirao's love for Mastani remains an inspiration for many. But, after watching the magnificent sets of the film, if you plan to explore the historical legacy of the Peshwa, you may be shocked. His memorial on Narmada banks is a spectacle of crumbling walls, unkept surroundings and lacks security and basic facilities like electricity and toilets.
Residents say if Maheshwari dam project is built, the monument could be submerged. "There's a proposal to build a triangular wall around the monument to prevent water from gushing in. Only a single wall has been built, but the monument remains vulnerable to floods," said Gaurav Mandloi, member of Srimant Bajirao Peshwa Kalyan Samiti, an NGO.
However, Revarkhedi panchayat secretary H Rameshwar refuted these allegations. "Construction is complete and precautions have been taken to protect the monument. There's no threat to the memorial," he said.
While the structure is falling apart, filth and debris in the premises and lack of promotional activity have kept tourists away.
