  Tondano came from the words: Tou Un Dano.Tou is People, Dano is Water,lake, or something related to water. Un is a pronoun.So Tou un dano is people who came from the place surrounding of water. Tondano river had been deepened, then the Deutch build water driven generator in Tonsea lama. The Tondano lake level then lowered,the surround of the lake specially at north and south side be came paddy field. At the upper course of the river, there is a place called Minawanua, where a wooden fort was build called Benteng Moraya by Tondano warrior to fight Dutch at the early of 18th Century. It takes years for dutch to win, they had to mobilized "Kora-Kora" ( Small shipps from Maluccans ) from Tanahwangko and East coast to fight the Tondano warrior. Sign of Ancient Cemetry still could be found at Minawanua. In 1970 we could still found the rotten wooden poles of the fort when we sail at the north end of the lake.
