The Long Island Rail Road trestle was installed across Blue Point Avenue between 1919 and 1920. The trestle is now 90 years old. It replaced a smaller, single track, wooden trestle that had been in place since around 1900. The current bridge is a double-track trestle although only a single LIRR track (Montauk Division) spans the bridge. Double east-west tracking ends in Sayville. A lot of old newspaper articles and postcards refer to the roadway under the bridge as the Blue Point Ave, “tunnel.”
