Added to the American Revolution Fortress West Point in 1778 to protect the Great Chain across the Hudson River. Known as Fort (Benedict) Arnold while he was commander of West Point from July to September 1780. Renamed Fort Clinton when Arnold's plot to surrender West Point and Constitiution Isand was exposed 23 September 1780. The fort was restored in 1857.

Construction began February 1778. Renamed for Brig.Gen. James Clinton after General Benedict Arnold deserted to the British.

This painting depicts the ramparts as they appeared in the 1860s, looking north toward Constitution Island, with the Hudson Highlands in the distance. Shown being serviced is a 10 inch smooth bore Rodman shore gun which had been cast at the West Point Foundry across the river. A similar Rodman gun is on display at Fort Knox, Maine.
