This cemetery dates back to the city's founding, and then sat just outside the original border of the city at East Street. Many of the city's early residents (including Joel Lane, on whose land the city was founded) are buried here.
From the plaque on the gate:
Raleigh’s first public burying ground. In 1798 the General Assembly authorized the city commissioners to lay off up to four acres of public land adjoining the city for this purpose. Additional land added later. Many of Raleigh’s earliest citizens interred here. Cemetery maintained by the city of Raleigh.
