This shrine was mentioned in "Engishiki" (Heian period); the existing main hall was originally constructed in 1673 in so-called "fish style".

Once also famous as having the biggest cedar tree in all Kanto region on its premises. Before being struck by lighting, the tree was over 27 meters high.
