Nevelsky Strait

Strait between the mainland Eurasia and Sakhalin Island. Connects the Tatar Strait to the Amur estuary. Length is about 56 km, the smallest width of 7.3 km, the depth of the channel to 7,2 m. It is named in honor of GINevelskoy, who discovered the strait in 1849. During the reign of Stalin a tunnel was planned under the strait.
