Brayford Mere is a 9 acre natural lake in the centre of Lincoln; it was formed at the point where the River Witham, running north, turns 90 degrees to the east. The original settlement of Lindum Colonia was here before the arrival of the Romans, remains of Iron Age roundhouses were uncovered here in 1972.
