Fort Lyon was named December 27, 1904 in honor of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, U.S. Volunteers (captain. 3rd U.S. Infantry), who served with distinction during the war with Mexico and the civil war, and who was killed in action at Wilsons Creek, Missouri, August 10, 1861.

Half the island is now used as a kayaking trip waypoint.

  • The military built Fort Lyon on Cow Island to defend Portland Harbor from enemy attack. There is access to the public on the west side of the island. For more info see http://www.travel-maine.info/historic_forts.htm.
