State owned island in West Casco Bay, which is part of the city of Portland. The island was uninhabited until 1921. Between 1921 and 1948, Jewell Island was used as an observation station and owned by the U.S. Army. During WWII, two 90mm Anti-Motor Torpedo Boat batteries and another battery were built to defend Portland Harbor. It is now a very popular summer spot for Portland area boaters.

  • I've been to Jewel Island. There is a nice cove to anchor larger boats on the western side. There are nice trails all around the island. There are lookout towers which you can climb up and check out a spectacular view of the ocean. We bring ropes out to them and repel off the top.
