During the SAC days, this was a "Q-base" (so named for the ultra-high "Q-level" clearance you had to get to work there), that stored all of the strategic nuclear weapons carried by the 4241st Strategic Wing's B-52 heavy bombers. It's location in a high security section of the base, directly next to the "Christmas tree" alert pad and barracks, far away from the normal flightline and facilities, was also intentional.
