Droitwich Spa

United Kingdom / England / Droitwich /
 town, borough, interesting place

Droitwich Spa is an historic town in northern Worcestershire, England, situated on massive deposits of salt. Salt has been extracted there since ancient times, the natural Droitwich brine containing 2½ lbs. of salt per gallon - ten times stronger than sea water and only rivalled by the Dead Sea.

Droitwich Spa is one of the three towns in the District of Wychavon. It has a thriving and vibrant community with a population of some 23,000, a wealth of history and lots to interest the visitor. Situated 6.5 miles north east of Worcester, it has easy access to the main attractions of the West Midlands.

In Roman times Droitwich was known as Salinae and the origins of salt extraction in the area go back to prehistoric times. Droitwich Spa brine exists far below the ground and emanates at the surface as springs.

The Town Council Office is on the former Brine Baths site, first established in the 1880's. The present black and white building, known as St. Richard's House, dates from the 1930's and as well as housing the administrative hub of the Town Council also has a very friendly and welcoming Tourist Information Centre, a fascinating local history exhibition and a small but comprehensive range of brass rubbing plates.
