  They are no longer friends, no longer in love, but merely a couple tied by a marriage contract. All they do now is present themselves before society as husband and wife. Each of them speaks a different language, their life is now wrapped in silence, she knows nothing about him apart from his outer appearance, and he hardly knows anything about her. The only thing they now share in common is their children’s affairs. It is as if he never knew her and she never knew him ever before. Something inside them has perished that they are unable to revive. Many couples live a life of emotional inertia, nothing was left from their marriage life but beautifully framed photos hanged on the walls. As time passes by those people end up battling a state of emotional dryness and thirst for love and kindness. In the end, they attempt to fill their life vacuum only to make things worse. For many of them, divorce appears to be the unavoidable option. Why does love fade away when the marriage ages while it is normally supposed to act the other way round? I recall a poem 'Be My Friend’. Every woman needs a friend to stand beside her in times of sorrow and difficulties, to share pain and happiness. Men feel the same desire. Marriage life is not all about reproduction and child raising nor is it about a weekly list of shopping items. These things are no sources of content. Everyone, man or woman, needs a partner who is cable of giving true and sincere love. There can and should be a sort of friendship between a married couple. When the spouses become friends they can understand each other in a better way. True love always involves friendship but unfortunately few couples succeed in becoming friends and this finally causes love to disappear. At this point the marriage becomes nothing but playing a role or a social responsibility. A marriage relationship that is void of understanding is destined to fail. With the passage of time nothing remains but the need to have a partner who is willing to share the troubles of life. It is so shocking to hear from a couple after long years that they have reached a dead end and that divorce has become the only solution to their troubled marriage. That’s because their relationship was not based on solid foundation of true emotions. They have spent the sweetest years of their lives trying to give others an impression that they are content with their marriage, a kind of social hypocrisy that has become common place now a days.
