Children’s Future India - CFI’s valuable contribution to Development of Raigad district


Children’s Future India, a reputed social work organisation is implementing varied types of social interest projects in large parts of Raigad district through its project at Pen. CFI Raigad Unit, Pen provides all the necessary educational aid to 3500 poor and needy children especially tribal children. All these children belong to deprived sections of society. The educational aid includes textbooks, notebooks, school stationary, a pair of school uniform, school bag, guides, raincoat, umbrella etc. These children are provided free medical checkup and necessary medicines after every six months. CFI also provides nutritious midday meals to extremely poor children through more than one hundred community Kitchen centers run in different villages. In addition to this about 2500 Non-sponsored children are provided all the necessary educational aid and other facilities. CFI also runs study classes and extra coaching classes for educationally retarded sponsored children. CFI also provides the valuable financial assistance to about 250 children to pursue their academic careers in higher education. CFI does not restrict itself only for providing educational aid but it strives to make all efforts to bring about overall personality development of sponsored children. It organizes personality development workshops and educational trips for sponsored children to provide them extra knowledge and much needed recreation. CFI also facilitates the integrated development of the family and community to which these sponsored children belong. CFI Raigad Unit is running a well equipped hospital at Pen and mobile dispensary for the benefit of more than 25,000 needy and poor patients from rural and tribal areas of Raigad district. Every year more than 1000 patients from villages and tribal areas take the benefit of hospital facility. Mobile dispensary covers a population of about 60,000 from rural and tribal areas. CFI Hospital has successfully motivated more than 7,000 rural and tribal males/females to undergo family planning operation at CFI hospital. CFI hospital is recognized and partially funded by Government of Maharashtra. The Health Department of Government of Maharashtra has funded for conducting 600 family planning operations.

CFI has covered more than 2600 parents of sponsored children under Janashree Bima Yojana of LIC. CFI has been paying their annual premium since the year 2003. This scheme provides several benefits to the policy holder. In case of natural death of any policy holder the family members get the benefit of Rs.30,000/-, in case of accidental death the family members get Rs.75,000/-. The school going children of the policy holder gets the benefit of scholarship scheme if they attend school from 9th to 12th std. Every child attending 9th to 12th std. gets the scholarship amount of Rs.1200/-every year. During the period 2006-09 the family members of the policy holders who applied for death claims received a total amount of Rs.13,65,000/-. During the same period total 1666 students studying from 9th to 12th std. received a total scholarship amount of Rs.19,99,200/-. This scholarship amount was distributed to these students by CFI. CFI Raigad Unit is also paying the premium amount of 236 mediclaim policy holders since the year 2008-09. All the family members of mediclaim policy holders get the benefit of this scheme in case of treatment of critical illness & hospitalization whenever necessary.

CFI Raigad Unit organized an innovative programme. Baljatra - Children’s fair at Pen from 27th to 29th January 2008. Total 1500 sponsored children enjoyed participating in children’s fair in which the expert resource persons imparted training in different skills to these children using informal teaching methods with a blend of plays, entertainment and knowledge. In his concluding speech Dr. Kishor Deshmukh, Head of Unit, CFI Raigad project expressed the strong hope that this innovative programme will definitely prove useful for enhancing grasping capacities and intellectual abilities of participant children which will enable them to face the challenges of future with boosted confidence.

Community Development Department of CFI has successfully constructed more than 1500 houses, sanitary blocks and toilets in difficult villages including remote tribal villages in Raigad district. Recognizing CFI’s good work central and State Government of Maharashtra have handed over their Gharkul Yojana (Constructing houses for indigenous people) to CFI for implementation. CFI has constructed more than 153 houses under this scheme. Different integrated development schemes are implemented in several villages with active community participation. These schemes include Gharkul Yojana, toilets, sanitary blocks, improved chullas, soak pits, Vanrai dams for soil and water conservation and development. Community Based organizations (CBOs) such as Self Help Groups of village women, youth Groups, village Development committees are encouraged and strengthened by providing training inputs for minimum skill development and by organizing exposure study tours.

CFI is implementing HIV/AIDS project in Pen in Raigad district from last 5 years. The project is working in 43 villages of Pen, Alibag, Khalapur, Panvel and Uran Blocks of Raigad district and working with Migrants & Truckers (13 spots each) on 65 kms. of Mumbai-Goa National Highway No.7. The long term goal of the project is to contribute to gain correct knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS and to reduce the number of new HIV/AIDS cases among the selected target group and objective is to create awareness at the village level regarding HIV/AIDS, to help PLHA for better life, sensitizing truckers & migrants regarding High Risk behavior. Under care & support programme CFI provides nutritious grocery material to HIV/AIDS clients. Educational Aid is given to 211 infected & affected students with the help of Clinton Foundation project. CFI provides nutrition package every month and transportation charges to CLHA (Children Living with HIV/AIDS). CFI provides livelihood support to 10 PLHAs and peer educators. Currently 10 PLHAs are on ART. CFI provides transportation facilities for needy PLHAs. For strengthening civil society the project team has formulated 8 Red ribbon clubs of self motivated youth & has developed strong linkages with Grampanchayat members, Key persons and has motivated volunteers from villages and now these persons are taking initiative for activity on their own. Under condom promotion program through 135 condom depots 165878 condoms have been distributed. The project has developed strong linkages with Reliance Hospital, J.J.Hospital, Mumbai, MSACS, NMP+ etc. for advocacy, experience sharing, IEC materials etc.

Dr. Kishor Deshmukh, National Youth Award winner and Head of Unit, CFI Raigad Project has been successfully providing an efficient, dynamic and inspiring leadership to a team of CFI officers- Mr.Shrikant Mhatre, Mrs.Vaishali Hajare, Mrs.Akshata Sawant, Mr. Y. B. Terwadkar, Mrs Neha Kadam & Mr. Prasad Deshmukh and more than 100 dedicated social workers who are successfully implementing multifaceted development projects of CFI Raigad Unit, Pen. Their painstaking and sustained efforts are making the lives of thousands of needy children, tribal and women comfortable and happy. This noble work of CFI Raigad Unit, Pen is definitely contributing to Development of Raigad District.
