Château du Verger

France / Pays-de-la-Loire / Seiches-sur-le-Loir / Le Verger
castle, listed building / architectural heritage

The first castle, doubtless a strengthened farm surrounded with staves and provided with a drawbridge, is, in 1441, Pierre Chabot's ownership, a middle-class person of Angers. Pierre de Rohan, marshal of Gié acquires it in 1482 and decides to make build a new house. The construction of the new castle ends in 1499. One of the descendants of the marshal, the cardinal of Rohan, makes it demolish in 1776. Still impressive vestiges of the immense castle are still visible: towers with machicolations, ditches, staves, enclosing wall of the park and the stables, the old prioral lodging house and the building of the XVIth. It is where is signed the treaty by Charles VIII, king of France and François II, duke of Brittany on August 19th, 1488. It stipulates that the heiress of the duchy cannot get married without the agreement of king of France.
