The oldest wooden bridge in Sweden is still in use. It was opened in 1737. 15 May 1809 there was a battle by the Lejonström bridge. The Russian army of 6 000 men wanted to secure the corn store by the Country church, which was defended by about 650 Swedes.
When the numerically inferior Swedes were withdrawing, there were fights by the bridge. The Swedes wanted to hold up the Russians to let the main body escape, but many lives were lost that day.
The Russians occupied the Skellefteå area during the summer in 1809. The 2 September, a truce was signed in village Frostkåge. That ended the Finnish war in Västerbotten. The peace treaty in Fredrikshamn was then signed 17 September 1809. Conditions were tough - Sweden lost Finland.
