Area used to teach basic mapping to Geology students. Contains Precambrian and Cambrian through Devonian stratigraphy. There are abundant trilobites, bioturbation, ripplemarks, desert varnish, and stromatolites (ancient fossil algae-carbonate lifeforms believed to be some of the most primitive multicellular animals). Excellent teaching location as it contains many faults and the rock units are easy to see in the extremely dry area. Please avoid damaging the site as this is a tool for students nationally.

Some rattlesnakes present, as are tarantulas, ants, and A-10 Tank Killers are known to make flybys low through this pass. Park off the road as local traffic tends to speed. Barrel cactus are common on the hillside and there is no shade. If you visit this site bring sturdy boots, water, and leather gloves as some rocks are capable of ripping skin easily, just by touching them.
