Basalt rock was quarried from the large boulders in this area to help construct the St. George Utah LDS Temple in the 1800s. The rock was hauled by wagon along the still-visible track around the south end of the upper mesa. The track is in use currently as a dirt pedestrian trail just over a mile in length (mostly level) offering public access to this historic site.
