In 1907, U.S. Steel agreed to build an integrated steel mill in the vicinity of Duluth, which was completed 1915. It would produce products from it's fabrication facilities such as, wire, steel wool, nails, fence & fence posts, & welded wire fabric for use with concrete to produce stronger roads. U.S. Steel continued run the plant & it's various works till it was shut down in 1981. Various smaller companies used the "cold" side of the plant till 1987.
The dismantling of the plant occurred from 1975-1999, not much of the plant remains today, except a few roads, railroad tracks, & only the outlines & floors of buildings remain. The only remaining structures is parts of the retaining walls for the ore storage yard.
In 1984, following an inspection by the Pollution Control Agency, the former Duluth Works steel plant site was put on the National Priorities List for the federally funded "superfund" program. Today the site still has issues, but has improved, & there is currently an ongoing investigation to determine the feasibility of re-developing 123 acre area.
