The Diourbel Regional Hospital was built in 1965/66 with financial and technical support from the Federal Republic of Germany. This hospital is the only referral institution for approximately 900.000 people living in the Diourbel region today. After the German financial and technical assistance ended in 1972, the national counterpart gradually ran into problems in maintaining the 120-bed hospital. The Government of the Republic of Senegal therefore asked the German Government at the beginning of the 1990s to assist the hospital again with rehabilitation. Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies came to the conclusion that technical and financial assistance this time should adopt a far more hospital managerial and quality-oriented approach. The objective of the project was to enable the Diourbel Regional Hospital to adequately play its role as a hospital referral institution in the Diourbel regional health system.
