In 1920, the industrialist August Heckscher built a small beaux-arts museum in the midst of Huntington's Heckscher Park to house his eclectic private collection ranging from Egyptian artifacts to 19th-century paintings glorifying the beauty of New York's Hudson River Valley. It was designed by the firm of Maynicke & Franke at a cost of $128,000 ($2.25 million dollars in 2017).
