  Back in 1981, this was the place to camp before ascending Mt. Whitney. My partner and I agreed to leave our packs at this location and carry the bare needs of some food and plenty of water for a day hike to the summit of Mt. Whitney and back. Turns out the strenuous difficulty of the day hike, to the summit, made that decision a wise one. Several lengths of trail to the summit would have been very hazardous with carrying a heavy pack. But in the present day, who knows the safety and security of leaving a pack behind for the day hike to the summit and back.
