uninhabited island
Add category
Pagan is a currently uninhabited island in the Northern Marianas island chain. Formed by two active stratovolcanoes and a small land strip between the two, the island has historically hosted a small population and has been governed by the Spanish, Germans, Japanese and Americans.
During World War Two, Japanese forces built an airstrip on the island which was subsequently subject to near-daily American attacks from June to November 1944.
In 1980 the island's Northern volcano erupted and lava flows destroyed much of the small village on the island, forcing the inhabitants to evacuate. Further eruptions in 2006 caused more lava flows to cover much of the airfield and the island remains uninhabited.
