The Silver Museum has an unusual tale to tell: the tale of a young doctor who came to Arjeplog in 1922 and stayed for the rest of his life. The "Lapland Doctor", Einar Wallquist, was fascinated by the people and the countryside, which formed the subject matter of his painting and writing. And he collected primarily lapish silver and handicraft.
Today, his collections and records of the life of the Sami people (Lapps) and settlers represent a shared concern for everyone living here. The Silver Museum is the common heritage of all the inhabitants of Arjeplog.
The museum takes its name from the celebrated and priceless collection of Sami silver in all its splendour and wealth of detail. It is the biggest collection of its kind and comprises nearly 700 silver objects from medieval times to the 20th century. The Silver museum's other collections of Sami articles, costumes, furniture and other everyday objects are also magnificent.
