  • Wellcome in Zapyskis Zapyskis municipality neighbours with Noreikiskes municipality, Ezerelis and Kacergine places, Lekeciai municipality (Sakiai district, Marijampole region), Kazlu Ruda municipality ( Marijampole region). The center of Zapyskis municipality is Kluoniskiai village. At all there are 19 villages in the municipality. The area: 175 km2, of which 67,8% is comprised of forests: 66,8% pine trees, 8,4% fir trees, 15,7% alder trees, 6,7% birch trees and etc. The population: 2446 people, of which 523 residents age to 16 (251 is the schoolchildren of Zapyskis Main School). Zapyskis is located on the left bank of the river Nemunas, in Uznemune North-East lowland. It is situated on the middle lowland of Lithuania. The average high is 55m. Zapyskis is 17 km to the West from Kaunas, along the road Kaunas-Sakiai. In 16th century the property of Zapyskis belonged to the Sapiegos. The property was called Panemune, later – Tarpupis and Sapiegiskis. The place is mentioned in 1575. There was a very important trade and post road Kaunas-Virbale along the place. The church was mentioned in 1562 and 1580. Zapyskis was the victim of the 17th-18th wars. In 1759 it belonged to Prusija and in 1815 it belonged to Russia. From 1825 till 1847 it had the rights of the town. In 1846 Zapyskis was flooded and in 1857 was fire-damaged. Also it was injured during the I World War. In 1919-1950 it was the center of villages. On the left bank of the Nemunas stands the gothic style St. Jonas Baptist church. It was built in 1578. It is very valuable and precious 16th century Lithuanian gothic memorial. This church had seen all century hardships, wars and floods before. It is wreathed in legends. From the beginning of 20th century the church isn’t used for religion ceremony. In summer there are concerts of sacred music, various cultural events in the church. Near the St. Jonas Baptist church is the oldest Zapyskis place. It was mentioned in 15th century. In 1990 during the summer archaeological researches in the oldest part of Zapyskis certified all the mentioned facts and gave the new information about the village location, people’s life and their houses. There is the monument of naming Lithuania’s 10 years Independence integrated between three oaks in Zapyskis place. It shows Lithuanian’s solidity and succession. It was built in 1929 in May by the leadership of Zapyskis shooter headman Jurgis Zitinevicius. In 1960 the monument was demolished. In 1989 the monument was rebuilt again by the leadership of members of Zapyskis Sajudis. There is the chapel in the oldest Zapyskis cemetery. It is very interesting construction of 19th century romanticism epoch. It has very big cultural and social meaning. There were buried priests. One of them was a priest Kolyta of Zapyskis church, the patron of V.Kudirka. The oldest Zapyskis cemetery is very valuable and has the lineament of Suvalkija culture and history. There were buried people of 1863 rising in this cemetery. It has the important meaning of writings on the personal monuments, which has been written in Lithuanian, local dialect. It shows not much influence of the Polish language to the people of East Suvalkija. There are very interesting crosses of blacksmith work left to these days in the cemetery. All these objects of culture inheritance are by the road Kaunas-Sakiai. There is the monument of poet A Vistelis-Visteliauskas (the sculptor S.Zirgulis) in the highest place of Zapyskis, in village of Kluoniskiai. The monument was built in 1989 in September. There is written: “ Oh, dear saint Lithuanian language. In memory of poet Andrius Vistelis by the people of Zapyskis.” There are a lot of archeological places around Zapyskis. The mounds of Altoniskai, Jadagoniai and Riogliskiai are very interesting of their legends and stories. The mound of Jadagoniai is called Raguva and the mound of Riogliskiai is called Riogla. The memorial stone in Kuras forestry marks the graves of rebels of 1863. The Jewish genocide sacrifice and the old Jewish memorial graves are in Dievogala and Kluoniskiai. There is buried Stanislovas Zemaitis as a victim of memory of Lithuanians’ suffering from Soviet Union in Zapyskis cemetery. He burnt himself in Moscow in Revoliution’s square in the 26th of April 1990 loading the protest against Lithuania’s economic blockade.
