Located in central Lithuania, covers area of 1496 km². Divided into 23 elderships. Administrative center Kaunas, has independent city municipality status. Cities are Garliava, Vilkija, Ežerėlis.
Some maor highways go across the muicipality, including A1 and Via Baltica. The longst rivers are Nemunas, Neris, Nevėžis, Jiesia. Kazlų Rūda forests, located in southwestern municipality part is the most forested area. Part of municipality is preserved by Kaunas reservoir Regional Park. There are some culture and archeologic heritage sites.
