Former coastal artillery site.

In a rare example of inter-service cooperation in WWII, the Navy offered the Army the two aft 14-inch turrets of the sunken USS Arizona for use as coast artillery emplacements on Oahu.

This battery was constructed first, and was named Battery Pennsylvania in honor of the Arizona's sistership USS Pensylvania.

The turrets required extensive repair and restoration after months of immersion in seawater, and the turrets were not nearing completion until the final days of WWII.

The battery was test-fired once.

Unfortunately for all later visitors to the island, both turret batteries were scrapped after the war.

the underground portions of the battery remain, but are usually off-limits.
