Fangataufa Atoll

French Polynesia / Tuamotu-Gambier / Fangatau /
 atoll, nuclear testing area

Fangataufa (also Fangatafoa) is an atoll in the eastern side of the Tuamotu Archipelago island group of French Polynesia.

Along with neighboring Moruroa, the two atolls have been the site of approximately 200 French nuclear bomb tests. Fangataufa was the test site of France's first thermonuclear device. The deep blue color of the lagoon displays the increased depth caused by bomb cratering.

Fangataufa is permanently uninhabited, and is now a bird reserve. Access to the atoll through the 400m artificially-created pass is prohibited and blocked by a chain boom that cannot be moved without special permission from the French Military.
