town, guildhall

Cosimo I had the biscuit factory built because he wanted the need of bread on behalf of both his garrisons and the new Medicean town (and later that of all Elba) to be met; after some renovation in the nineteenth century, today this building is the seat of the Town Offices in Portoferraio.
There is a plaque in memory of Napoleon's exile in Elba on the front wall, and a copy of a Roman altarin the yard, dedicated to Hercules (now on show in the Linguella Archeology Museum); it was done by Publio Acilio Attiano, the then Praetorium Prefect who lived between the I and II centuries AD, and who seemigly was the owner of the Roman Villa of the Grotte. www.infoelba.com/
