In the heart of Trencin, directly below the castle, the Hungarian nobleman Baron Armin Herman Popper von Podhrágy had a luxurious hotel establishment built in 1901. Erected on the site of the old town inn "U cervenej hviezdy" ("To the Red Star"), a hotel was born in the historicist style typical of this era. Popper named the hotel in honour of Elisabeth of Austria, after whom the hotel’s own Café Sissi is also named today. Immediately after its opening on 1 January 1902, the first hotel on the square became a central element of cultural and society life in the town of Trencín. In 1919, the Tatra Bank took ownership of the building, running it as Hotel Tatra from 1921 on.
Extensive renovation work took place between 1987 and 1994, conducted with great consideration for the historical structure of the building. In the years 2010 to 2012 most recent renovations followed, in the course of which the hotel was remodelled into a modern business and spa hotel.
