Alton was first known as Bull City. It was founded in 1870 and named after one of the founders, Hiram C. Bull. Mr. Bull was killed by his own pet elk in 1879. Later a petition was passed and the name changed to Alton (after Alton Illinois). The Zip Code is 67623.
