In 1950-1953, a huge blasting project took place to clear a path through this hill to make way for US 395. At the time, US 395 was only 2 lanes wide and in 1979, more blasting took place to widen US 395 to 4 lanes with a center medial (for future widening) to to bring the highway up to interstate standards for the eventual renaming of US 395 to I-215.
