house, apartment building, neighbourhood development, town planning
The project was initiated by Fernand Brunfaut for the Foyer Laekenois in 1958, to coincide with the Brussels Wiorld fair.. As a true city in the city, the model city had to have all the services the inhabitants needed: a school, shops, a sports centre, a church, etc. without forgetting the still very present, green areas on the site.
It is now necessary to renovate the buildings according to the criteria of modern comfort. So 180 houses have been converted into 138 larger flats and 142 new lodgings will be developed.
A second phase (98 flats) is considered, but the 11,5 million euro financing necessary for its achievement is not secured yet.
