The ranch was once owned by Robert Louis Stevenson’s widow, Fannie Stevenson. Vanumanutagi is a Samoan word that means "vale of the singing birds." The Ware family now owns it and planted the vineyard in 1981. Each block is named after one of Stevenson's novels, including Kidnapped, Jekyll & Hyde and Treasure Island.
