Between Hirta and Soay lies Stac Biorach, which the St Kildans climbed to collect seabirds' eggs. In the mid-19th century the minister, the Rev Neil Mackenzie, observed the islanders collecting eggs from here in straw baskets like flat-bottomed bee hives, each basket holding about 400 eggs.
