Through Sutton Park runs a one a half mile preserved section of the original Icknield Street, that was constructed by the Romans. This stretch is considered to be one of the best preserved parts in the Midlands, with elements of the construction process also visible.
Ditches either side mark where material was excavated to create the gravelly surface, as the street was never paved. Roman coins have been discovered along the stretch as well as farther out into the park.
