Grey Gardens was the home of Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale. The two women were the aunt and first cousin, respectively, of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The Beale family moved into the mansion in 1923, but after the desertion of her husband, Phelan Beale, Edie fell into relative poverty. The spectacular deterioration of the house and property in the 1960s eventually prompted legal action by Suffolk County health authorities.

A documentary film, Broadway musical, and 2009 HBO movie - all called "Grey Gardens" - were based on the day-to-day lives of Big and Little Edie as they lived in squalor in one of America's most exclusive neighborhoods.

In 2018 new owners embarked on a second renovation that would create a finished basement to expand the internal space without altering the structure.
