In the grounds of the Natural History Museum stands a statue of Thomas Heazle Parke 1857-1893. Born at Clogher House in Kilmore, County Roscommon, he received his early education at Edward Power's School in Harrington Street, before going on to the Royal College of Surgeons. He served with the British Army in Egypt on the Nile expedition, to relieve General Gorden in Khartoum, and in 1887, was chosen as Medical Officer on the expedition led by Henry Morten Stanley to find Livingstone. These adventures he recounted in My Personal Experiences in Equatorial Africa.
