Sir Philip Crampton, Surgeon-General, who lived at Number 14 Merrion Square, was famous throughout Europe. He had an immense practice and once boasted that he had once swum across Lough Bray, ridden into town, and amputated a limb before breakfast. He was also a founder member of the Royal Zoological Society.
