The Steyne is on the site where the first Vikings landed in Dublin. At that time the present Townsend Street was the shoreline. The present structure, erected in 1986, replaces the original that stood here for 850 years before, in 1681 it disappeared when the Thingmote was levelled. Sculpted by Cliodhna Cussen the pillar shows two heads - one represents Ivor, a 9th-century Viking ruler of Dublin, while the other represents a nun in reference to the former convent of Mary de Hogges.
